The same thing that makes you different from other people on the planet - your unique personality and approach - is the key differentiating factor between your blog and anyone else's.
Just as you have a set of personal values
and morals, your blog should follow suit and have an overarching set of
principles and beliefs. As the saying goes "if you don't stand for
something, you'll fall for anything" and this is particularly true with
hosting a creative platform.
As you will often be approached by brands, fellow creatives, lucrative
opportunities and content ideas you must be able to identify whether it is
right or wrong accept or reject these offers. It is important to achieve
balance and I always ensure that each opportunity I take is in line with
personal values and the moral compass of my platform. The easiest way to
achieve this is to have a mission statement that anchors your platform and centres
your content.
A mission statement is a short and concise sentence or two, which encapsulates
what your blog is all about and the key objectives of your platform.
My personal mission statement for JBS is:
“My aim is to inspire and empower young women into using cosmetics effectively to boost their confidence and to help them feel comfortable with who they are. Jordy's Beauty Spot is a positive place to uplift women and encourage them to see that they are beautiful.”
“My aim is to inspire and empower young women into using cosmetics effectively to boost their confidence and to help them feel comfortable with who they are. Jordy's Beauty Spot is a positive place to uplift women and encourage them to see that they are beautiful.”
So, the meaning behind
JBS is to uplift, encourage, motivate, inspire, and help build confidence.
Beauty blogging is anything but superficial because, at least on JBS, I discuss
tips for happiness, health and feeling beautiful both inside and out. I wrote
that message over five years ago, and it hasn’t changed at all because I have
always stayed true to the backbone of my blog, so it has anchored my content as
such.
You might say this is taking blogging too seriously, but I disagree, as every business has an philosophy behind it – what they believe in as an organization, whom they want to reach with their product, and why they do what they do. This is an important point of reference when it comes to deciding what content to put up, what brands to work with and how to run the blog. It is not about what you are ‘selling’, it is about why you are ‘selling’ it. In other words, if they believe in the message of your blog they are going to support your content.
I think it is really
important to take a stance and share the meaning behind your blog because it is something that not only your
readers will appreciate but that brands will value also. Most companies follow
the same formula and have a mission statement that also impacts every business
decision they make. It is important to have a unique ethos and values behind
their company too, and when both your missions align, it makes for a healthy
and successful collaboration. It shows that you both believe in the same
message and are on the same page, cementing your synergy as collaboration. I
absolutely love that I have had many companies contact me based solely on my
mission statement, which they believe their brand stands for too. Immediately
it makes me more inclined to work with the company because we stand for the
same values and are striving to achieve the same results.
That is exactly why you will never find me working with a waist trainer brand
or some laxative based detox tea. I believe that these types of brands don’t
cultivate the kind of self-acceptance and confidence in women feeling
comfortable just the way they are, which is a virtue on my blog I would never
risk to jeopardize.
